about

On May 30th, 2012, four souls were gunned down at Seattle's Cafe Racer, and later a fifth soul on First Hill, near downtown Seattle. The tragic events of that day tore through this small community and hub for creative music. In the aftermath of the shooting, saxophonist Neil Welch penned and recorded an elegy for the fallen victims, often called by its shorter name--the Response album. In this emotively powerful document, Welch reaffirms his role as an intractable voice of modern solo saxophone technique.

The album is a quiet, solemn celebration of the fallen victims and of the Seattle creative music community itself. Neil explores the subtlest aspects of his instrument through a 36 minute composition, intended to be experienced in a single listening. The work was fully composed, written in traditional and graphic notations, including Neil's own unique fingering systems and performance directions. The music recorded on the Response album was originally debuted at Cafe Racer the week of its reopening, and will now be released shortly after the 2-year anniversary of the shooting. This important new work confronts the suffering of that terrible day but also embodies a community in healing.

All proceeds from the sale of this album will be donated to caferacerlove.org, a fund established to benefit families of the victims.
