about

"Welch's rendering of the Coltrane masterpiece After the Rain uses acoustically created chords called "multiphonics" as the foundation of this piece. He blends multiphonics and singing into the tenor and bass saxophones to create new harmonic territories with imaginative effect. Layer upon layer of electronically processed bass saxophone also lends a darkened hue throughout. The ringing chords were created by playing arpeggiated melodies directly into the belly of a de-tuned upright piano, amplifying the string reverberations and cutting out the initial attack.

Seattle bassist Kelsey Mines is a star of this track, providing gorgeous bass lines and a masterful solo. In After the Rain, Mines and Welch create a virtuosic dialogue where each musician's role as melody maker and time keeper remains in a continuous state of flux."

This recording is given in deepest gratitude to John Coltrane and in contribution to his living legacy.
