"the ink around it" is saxophonist/composer Neil Welch's latest offering, a two part concept album which explores the vibrant, lush abundance of the natural world and the human interference within the biodiversity that threatens our one, beautiful Earth-home. The album features two long-form pieces, including "Puhpowee" for solo saxophone and "Concepción Picciotto" for an 11 member ensemble (mezzo-soprano vocalist, saxophone section + soloist, string trio and rhythm section).
From performer and composer Neil Welch:
"The album title 'the ink around it' seemed fitting to me. These words are an expression of the human drive to create permanent markings in a world where the vast majority of us humans are in constant conflict within the environment we completely depend on. However, it is also a hopeful affirmation of nature's resiliency, and a celebration of the each human's individual capacity to impart meaningful change for the benefit of all life."

Hard to pick a favorite. Chthonic, volcanic, explosive, upwelling, expansive, ultimately returning to a radiant stillness. Bad Luck, the creator and destroyer of worlds. Nick Toombs

An album of tunes by Tim Berne played on acoustic guitar is not a thing that I realized I needed. Gregg Belisle-Chi (produced by Berne and David Torn) does something remarkable and organic on Koi, simultaneously distilling Berne’s compositions to their essential elements and imbuing them with a new kind of life. accordeonaire
